Newsletter 135

Dear Collector

This month’s newsletter is rich in books on ships and the sea.  These can be found in two categories: MARITIME, and JOSE BURMAN.  Jose Burman wrote much about South African shipping history and the shipwrecks scattered around our treacherous coast.  A writer of around forty books on a variety of subjects, largely relating to the Cape, Burman is sometimes viewed in the same light as such popular authors as Lawrence G. Green and T V Bulpin.  There is, however, solid history in his appealing works, which are the output of an authority rather than a mere itinerant storymonger.  Some of his books – notably Towards the Far Horizon: The Story of the Ox-wagon in South Africa – have actually become quite uncommon, and increasingly sought-after.

Further books to look out for this month include:

  • C Graham Botha’s The French Refugees at the Cape,
  • Patricia Storrar’s A Colossus of Roads,
  • Barry Berkovitch’s The Cape Gunsmith,
  • Dorothea Fairbridge’s Historic Houses of South Africa,
  • books on early South African motoring by Bob Johnston,
  • Ralph Putzel’s 4-volume Encyclopaedia of South African Post Offices and Postal Agencies,
  • the Brenthurst Press publication The Cape of Good Hope 1806 to 1872,
  • some interesting South African JUDAICA titles, including Founders and Followers – Johannesburg Jewry 1887-1915, and
  • a deluxe edition of the Pitman and Palmer’s 3-volume Trees of Southern Africa.

As always, we hope we have found something for you.  Given events of the past few days, it is worth noting that the exchange rate applied for this newsletter is £1:R16.00 – very generous terms that we feel sure our customers will appreciate.  The link to the list can be found here:

Best wishes
Lindsay and Wendy
